August 2005

President's Message:

Can’t believe that summer is almost over and the fall semester is right around the corner. Hope all of you have had a great time the last few months, whether you were off or working.

With the end of summer, our annual conference is just around the corner. This year, as you know, it will be held in El Paso. The last time we were there was wonderful! Make your plans and mark your calendars for October 12, 13, and 14. And, help Lolo out by planning to present a program.

Another thing that is winding is my presidency. I will turn over the reins to Sherry Lang on Friday morning of the conference. I have had a ball. It’s been a distinct honor and pleasure to serve as your president for the last two years.

Also, we will be looking for board members as we always do at this time of year. So, if you are interested in running for a board slot, please e-mail me at jbicknell@templejc.edu at least two weeks prior to the annual conference.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and I’ll see you in El Paso.

John Bicknell

The Disability Support Services has initiated research on color lighting.  This will evaluate the effects of blue lighting for students with reading comprehension weaknesses and test anxiety problems.  According to Denise Pergl, CTC learning disability counselor, the research will be conducted over the summer and fall semesters and the outcomes of the research will be submitted for publication in the spring of 2006.  Blue lighting and blue overlays have been used for students as well as workers with dyslexia and Scotopic Sensivity Syndrome with success for many years.

Research must have been completed during the period of September 1 to July 31 of the preceding year. To be considered for the $500 award, which is presented at the annual J/CCSPAT Conference, applicants must submit two copies of research by August 15to:
